What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

AEO aims to have your content returned as the direct answer to a question – in voice assistants, featured snippets and AI assistants.

Definition

An answer engine delivers an answer instead of a list of links. Answer Engine Optimization covers all measures that prepare content in such a way that a system like this selects it as the answer. The term emerged with featured snippets and voice assistants and is now used for AI assistants as well.

AEO, GEO, SEO – telling them apart

In practice, AEO and GEO are often used interchangeably. If you want to distinguish them: AEO emphasizes the format – question, concise answer, markup. GEO is broader and includes how generative models evaluate, compare and recommend brands, external sources included. SEO remains the foundation for both.

What makes content answer-ready

  • The question is the heading, the answer is in the first one or two sentences below it
  • An answer makes sense on its own, even without the rest of the page
  • Concrete details instead of paraphrases: numbers, steps, conditions
  • FAQPage, HowTo or Product markup where it fits the content
  • The content is in the HTML and is not loaded in later via JavaScript

AEO in practice with KI.SO

KI.SO shows you which questions people ask in your topic area and for which of them your brand is missing from the answer. From this, the FAQ generator creates answer-ready content including JSON-LD, which you serve server-side on your website. The next analysis shows whether the AI picks up your answers.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

Largely. Both aim at visibility in answers rather than in lists of results. GEO is the newer and more comprehensive term; AEO puts the emphasis on the question-and-answer format.

Do I need a dedicated FAQ page for AEO?

Not necessarily. Questions and answers work best where they belong in terms of content – on product, service or guide pages. A central FAQ page is a sensible addition.

Does schema markup really help?

Markup is no guarantee, but it makes question and answer unambiguously recognizable to machines. That demonstrably helps Google and also makes it easier for other systems to match things up.
