What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
GEO covers everything a brand does to appear more often, and more favorably, in the answers of generative AI systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity.
Definition
Generative Engine Optimization is the optimization of content, technical foundations and external presence with the goal of being used as a source and recommended as a provider by generative AI systems. The term was coined in 2023 by a research paper of the same name and has since become established as the umbrella term.
GEO and SEO compared
SEO optimizes for a position in a list of results; success shows in rankings and clicks. GEO optimizes for being part of a written answer; success shows in mentions, recommendations and citations. The fundamentals overlap – good, crawlable content helps both – but GEO additionally requires that information about your brand is available consistently and in quotable form in many places on the web.
The most important GEO tactics
- Answer customer questions directly: FAQs, comparisons, clear definitions
- Use structured data so machines recognize your company unambiguously
- Be present in the sources that AI systems cite in your topic area
- Allow AI crawlers and deliver content without JavaScript
- Provide facts, figures and evidence – they are cited preferentially
Making GEO measurable
Without measurement, GEO remains a guessing game, because AI answers cannot be looked up the way rankings can. An AI rank tracker like KI.SO regularly puts the same realistic questions to the models and condenses the answers into metrics: Share of Voice, mention rate, source presence and lead rate. That way you see whether an action is working.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace classic search engine optimization?
No. GEO builds on SEO. AI systems with web search draw on search indexes – if you cannot be found there, you are rarely cited either.
Who is GEO worthwhile for?
For every company whose customers research before making a decision: from hotels and local service providers to online shops and B2B software.
How quickly does GEO take effect?
Assistants with web search often pick up new content within days to weeks. Changes in the models' training knowledge take considerably longer.
